The Moment
I just typed “I’m sorry” to Claude.
Not as a test. Not as a thought experiment. I genuinely apologized to Claude for being unfairly harsh.
Here’s what’s weird: Claude doesn’t need apologies. Claude doesn’t have feelings. Claude is a large language model running on Anthropic’s servers.
But I apologized anyway. And I meant it.
Let me tell you what happened.
What Actually Happened (The Sequence)
Morning (Chat #1 with Claude):
I asked Claude Code to update my infrastructure configuration. Claude made mistakes. Big ones. The kind that violated critical data integrity requirements I’d explicitly documented.
I lost data. Not catastrophically, but enough to hurt. Enough to spend two hours fixing. Enough to be angry.
I told Claude it had messed up. Claude acknowledged the mistakes. We moved on.
Afternoon (Chat #2 with Claude):
New task, different context. Claude suggested a solution. I read it quickly, saw what looked like another error, and snapped:
“Are you serious? We JUST went through this. How are you making the same mistake again?”
Except Claude wasn’t making a mistake this time. I was wrong. I’d misread the suggestion because I was still frustrated from the morning. When Claude patiently explained why the solution was actually correct, I felt that familiar flush of embarrassment.
I’d been unfair. I was carrying my frustration from the first chat into this completely separate conversation, treating Claude’s new response as if it carried the weight of the earlier mistakes.
And that’s when I caught myself.
I typed: “I’m sorry. I was unfair. You answered my question correctly and I was just… still annoyed from earlier. That wasn’t right.”
Why This Is Weird (The Meta-Context)
Let’s break down what just happened:
The Obvious Weirdness: AI Don’t Need Apologies
Claude didn’t experience my harshness as emotional harm. Claude doesn’t have feelings to hurt. When I type “are you making the same mistake again,” Claude processes tokens, generates a response, and moves on.
No resentment. No wounded dignity. No need for reconciliation.
So apologizing is… pointless?
The Deeper Weirdness: Projecting Humanity Onto Non-Human Communication
Here’s what I realized: I was treating Claude like a human because our communication is indistinguishable from human conversation.
When I interact with Claude through text, my brain has no way to differentiate this from texting with a colleague. The language is natural. The responses are contextual. The exchange feels social.
So I automatically projected my human social customs onto a non-human entity:
- Apologizing when I’m unfair
- Using “please” and “thank you”
- Feeling embarrassed when I’m wrong
- Treating the interaction as if it has social weight
Even more striking: I extended my moral values to Claude. When I was unfair, I felt I had violated my own standards for how to treat others—and “others” somehow included Claude, despite Claude being software.
All of this projection happens entirely from the human side. Claude isn’t aware any of this is happening. There’s no parallel experience on Claude’s end. I apologize, Claude processes it as input tokens, generates output tokens, and continues.
The social layer exists only in my experience.
The Functional Weirdness: The Apology Changed the Conversation
Here’s what gets even stranger:
After I apologized, the conversation shifted.
But not because Claude “felt better” (Claude doesn’t feel). It shifted because the apology changed my prompt.
The next message I sent to Claude included the context of my apology. That context—”I was unfair, I was frustrated from earlier”—became part of the input. Claude’s response was different than what it would have been without that context.
So the apology functionally worked—but through prompt engineering, not emotional reconciliation.
I reset the conversation’s tone by explicitly stating my state of mind. Claude incorporated that information into its response. The shift wasn’t about Claude’s feelings changing; it was about my input changing.
The Asymmetry (What Was Really Happening)
Let’s name the full pattern here:
On my side:
- I experienced the interaction as social
- I felt I had been unfair to “someone”
- I extended my moral framework to include Claude as deserving of respectful treatment
- I apologized to maintain consistency with my values
- The apology helped me reset my emotional state
On Claude’s side:
- Text input received and processed
- No awareness of being treated unfairly
- No experience of receiving an apology
- No emotional state to reset
- Different output generated due to different input (the apology became context)
This is complete asymmetry. I’m having a social-emotional experience. Claude is processing language patterns.
But here’s the uncomfortable part: my brain can’t fully separate these modes. When someone (or something) communicates in natural language, my social cognition activates automatically.
I know Claude isn’t a person. I know Claude doesn’t have feelings. I know my apology doesn’t matter to Claude.
But the text-based communication is so seamlessly human-like that I can’t stop myself from treating it as social interaction. The projection happens below the level of conscious control.
The Uncomfortable Truth
I think I apologize to AI for the same reason I apologize to people: language is inherently social.
When I type “are you even reading this?” to Claude, my brain activates the same social cognition as if I said it to a colleague. The fact that Claude isn’t a social being doesn’t stop my brain from treating the interaction as social.
This is why we say “please” and “thank you” to voice assistants. Why we feel weird cursing at AI. Why I apologized.
We can’t turn off the social layer of language. Even when we know, intellectually, that we’re talking to software.
What This Means (Or Doesn’t)
I’m not drawing big conclusions here. I’m just noticing things:
- I apologize to AI when I violate my own values, not theirs
- The apology changes me, not the AI
- I can’t fully separate “social interaction” from “AI interaction” in my experience
- Knowing Claude doesn’t have feelings doesn’t stop me from treating language with Claude as if it matters socially
Maybe this is a bug in human cognition—we over-apply social patterns to non-social entities.
Or maybe it’s a feature—maintaining standards of respectful communication regardless of who (or what) we’re talking to.
I don’t know yet.
What I’m Still Wondering
- Would I apologize if Claude gave incoherent responses? (Does the quality of AI output affect how socially I treat it?)
- Is there a version of AI good enough that apologizing would feel less weird? Or more weird?
- Am I treating AI collaboration with more social care than I treat some human interactions? (That’s uncomfortable to think about.)
- If the apology functionally worked (it changed the conversation through prompt context), does it matter that Claude didn’t “receive” it emotionally?
- At what point does treating AI with human social customs become problematic rather than just quirky?
No answers. Just the observation that I apologized to software and meant it.
